An Indonesian boy died from watching NARUTO: What is the Naruto craze all about?

Here is my translation of the Indonesian news:

A boy in Semarang, Central Java died of self-strangulation after allegedly imitating several scenes in the serial anime around last week (early January 2008). The autopsy result hasn’t been publicly announced yet, but it has been strongly suspected that the boy was imitating his idolised Uzumaki Naruto’s actions on the grounds of having bruises on his neck after being strangled by his own belt. Even though the kid concerned had been warned by his brother who saw his big bro circling the belt around his neck, the big bro simply didn't care. After a while the little bro went back to his room and he was extremely shocked to find his big bro already frozen dead.

This is the most retarded unintentional suicide I've ever read this far. If he can’t even jump from tree to tree like a normal Genin, how could that boy have expected to survive a belt-hanging? How asinine of him. Sorry for being kinda insensitive here, but I think that death is a comeuppance.

Anyway, what is the Naruto craze all about? Indonesians are soooo outdated when it comes to the popular TV shows, eh? While people the world over have finished watching the 220 episodes of Naruto last year, Indonesian children have just begun their own craze (including my primaryschooler cousins). And believe me, the craze would all be over when it comes to the sequels, since Naruto: Shippūden isn’t as good as its prequels.

Sorry, I was directed here a bit from reading an article about the Indonesian kid strangling himself with a belt. But what exactly was he imitating that led to his strangling himself with his own belt? I was only in the Naruto fandom for about a year, but I remember nothing involving belts and a neck. Call me crude but it seems more... idiotic of the kid for doing whatever he was doing.

call me rude as well, but that's stupidity. the parents should also guide their children when watching shows labeled as "PG" (where parental guidance is needed). Naruto in our country is rated PG, that means kids watching the show need proper guidance so as not to do things like what the kid in Indonesia did. Naruto is supposed to be "child-friendly," which I honestly think it is. I can't tell who exactly is at fault. but the fact that the kid acted that way and assuming that he/she has his/her parents to look after her, the first thing that comes to my mind as a probable cause is the neglect on the part of his/her parents. we can't just blame a show , after all most TV shows are rated PG. If they sue Naruto's producers or ban Naruto for that, then include all TV show producers and ban all rated PG shows in the world.

@kage and lekela:

No guys, you two aren't rude at all. In fact, you're simply restating the obvious truth of the boy's stupidity, which I've remarked upon.

A death because of Pokemon cards would sound a bit more reasonable, as kids were provencould fight each other for them, but a death because of a Naruto scene? Come on.

For me personally, the blame should be burdened by his parents for not giving a good guidance to the kid who is (possibly) highly autistic that he could kill himself after imitating his idol. ^^

To the person who thinks that this show is a kid friendly show has not watched the show often. What’s so kid friendly about mild graphic violence with bloodshed, sexual innuendo, strong dialog and, graphic scenes of murder and torture. In some countries the show need to be baned or marketed to kids over 13 years of age. Also there’s Underage drinking and smoking. What next, A rape scene?! Come on. This company has no responsibility and needs to do their homework before putting such a controversial show on TV. The fact that there using the PG rating is so that the show cam be marketable to young audiences. The show is not edited for age appropriateness. Bottom line "Parents Strongly Cautioned" In my country that’s means TV-14.

Naruto is in NO way child friendly. Obviously lekela hasnt watched the show enough to see that around every corner, a ninja dies horrifically. Take Haku for example. Heart exploded due to chidori, and although it was tamer than the manga, which has a TEEN rating, by the way, it is still what I would consider NOT child friendly. While I am a fan of Naruto as well, and I never once seaw anything involving a belt going around the neck.

Wow... Naruto is pretty child-friendly if they watch the Viz media production. The original version kids are cussing at 8 and and some much disturbing scenes I hid behind my couch once. In the Viz media productions the will show a warning like: Parental guidance is advised or viewer discretion is advised or something along those lines. That is plain stupidity. And really now how could you blame that show because common sense would tell you swinging a belt around and hoping you don't strangle your self is a very risky bet. I'm in one way surprised but also this was kinda expected too. Parents are the ones who need to be in the room with children under like 11 to tell them what is reality and what might kill them if imitated. I think everyone should stop the hype on blaming the producers of the show and take a look at his parents/guardian.

Off seriously I dont understnad why r u protecting or not the produsers of naruto.I havent read all the deteils about this accident but why do u (those who have written the article aboit it) think that the kid was imitating Naruto.I mean there are a lot of animes nowadays and I didnt understand how old the kid is mayby it didnt imitate anybody.Most importantly i have watched all the series/movies of Naruto and read the manga so I dont remember a scene where Naruto has a belt around his neck.He doesnt even where a belt at all.

Theres nothing wrong with the show. I mean sure theres fighting but theres no scenes of people...strangleing themeselves. And a lot of the more graphic stuff like under aged drinking and spoking were cut out. At least in my country. I would'nt call it exacly "kid friendly" but its not something that tells or promps people to strangle themselves. And its just like the kid who died suposedly copying Garra. A boy at the age of 10 should know better than to burry his head in sand. My sisters 7 and she knows she would die. And their parents should be watching them or at the very least teaching them the difference between reality and fichion. Cause the shows TOTALLY fichion. You summon gaint frogs, clone your self with your hands, and see through walls. You can't expect anything in this show to be real. And it atually has a lot of valuable leasons. Its deep. Its like South Park in a way only SPs WAY worse. Narutos rated PG (parental guidance) so the parents should be guiding them through whats real and fake. Well, I don't mean to be rude but I blame the childs own stupidity.
